BROWARD
DILLARD PANTHERS (6A- 15)
2014 RECORD: 5-5
THE COACH: Lorenzo Davis
THE PLAYERS: Aaron Thompson (Sr., DT), Jordan
Merrell (Jr., WR), Tyler Dunning (Sr., LB), Jon Ford (Jr., DE),
Demetrius White (Sr., WR), Kenneth Ruff (Sr., LB), Ernest
Sellers (Sr., OT), James Jackson (Sr., WR)
THE WORD: The Panthers missed the playoffs last year
after making them in coach Davis’ first two seasons at the
helm. With Boynton Beach as the only returning playoff
team in a new-look district, Dillard should get back into
the postseason. Thompson ( 6-3, 270) owns double-digit
scholarship offers after racking up 51 tackles and 12 sacks
last season and should have a stellar senior campaign
with plenty of talent around him, including Ford ( 6-4, 250).
Merrell ( 5-10, 175) led Dillard last season with 35 catches
for 678 yards and 8 touchdowns and is only the first
weapon in a passing game that features three legit college
receiving prospects. White ( 6-1, 200) caught 28 passes
for 479 yards and 4 scores in 2014 and Jackson ( 6-3, 190)
had 24 catches for 327 yards and 3 scores. The concerns
are quarterback play, turnovers and better offense in the
red zone. All three killed Dillard last season.
DOUGLAS EAGLES (8A- 11)
2014 RECORD: 7-3
THE COACH: Willis “Peanut” May Jr.
THE PLAYERS: Joe Durante (Sr., OL), Lance Moise (Sr., LB),
Damian Phillips (Sr., RB), Thomas McGowan (Sr. ,DL), Andrew
McFarlane (Sr., DB), Raymond Menendez (Sr., LB), Josh
Paulson (Sr., DB), Corey Gaynor (Jr., OL), Daniel Crescitelli (Jr.,
LB), Matthew Cabey (Jr., WR), Nick Weber (Jr., OL), Yohance
Williams (Soph., LB), Steven Shine (Soph., TE), Tyler Goodman
(Soph., QB), Max Miednik (Jr., TE), Tai Lehtio (Soph., WR), Owen
Minott (Sr., WR), Courtney Douglas (Jr., OL), Mike Dudley (Jr.,
DL), Jamal Polycarpe (Jr., DB), John Grimaldi (Jr., OL), Trent
Baldeo (Jr., DB), Jordan Cyrus (Jr., DL), Jared Hollander (Jr., K)
THE WORD: The Eagles bring back eight starters on
offense and seven on defense from a team that just missed
becoming the first at Douglas to reach the playoffs since
2007. Among the big losses: quarterback Brett Israel and
leading receiver Tate Lehtio to graduation and leading
rusher Khalil Herbert, who transferred to Plantation American Heritage. Coach May is excited about the returning
experience he has on the offensive and defensive lines and
at linebacker. Durante ( 6-1, 235) has a 3. 7 GPA and scored
a 24 on his AC T. He will anchor both lines. Moise ( 5-11,
185) was the third-leading tackler on last year’s squad.
EVERGLADES GATORS (8A- 12)
2014 RECORD: 4-6
THE COACH: Art Taylor
THE PLAYERS: Keenan Forbes (Sr., OL), Jaykus Johnson
(Soph., RB), Javari Alvin (Sr., QB), Devon Daniels (Sr., LB)
THE WORD: The Gators haven’t been to the playoffs
since 2010 and will need to pull off an upset or two to
get back there this fall. Only seven lettermen are back
from last season, including four starters on offense and
two on defense. Johnson ( 5-10, 185) ran for 916 yards
and 10 touchdowns as a freshman and will once again
have Forbes ( 6-3, 270) opening holes for him. Forbes has
already received offers from Marshall, Temple and Tulane.
Former Florida State first-round pick and nine-year pro Alex
Barron has joined the staff and will coach the offensive
line. Taylor, who is 71-51 in his head coaching career, said
the secondary, defensive line and pass protection were his
primary concerns heading into the summer.
FLANAGAN FALCONS (8A- 12)
2014 RECORD: 13-1
THE COACH: Devin Bush
THE PLAYERS: Devin Bush Jr. (Sr., LB), Jahcour Pearson
(Sr., WR), Stanford Samuels (Jr., DB), Clevan Thomas (Jr., WR),
Devin Gil (Sr., DB), Kato Nelson (Sr., QB), Josh Metellus (Sr., DB),
Maurice Codner (Sr., WR), Isaiah Murray (Sr., OL), Tyler Goetz
(Sr., LB/ TE), Rocco Marucci (Sr., DB), Javhari Bourdeau (Sr., DB),
Natrone Ray (Sr., DE), Faion Hicks (Jr., ATH), Dennis Jackson (Sr.,
DT), Kassy Desir (Sr., OL), Marcus Etienne (Jr., OL/DL)
THE WORD: The bulk of the starters from a state semifinal
team that averaged 36 points a game are gone, but a good
chunk of the guys on a defense that allowed only 9. 4 points
per game are back. And, the Falcons had a pretty good offseason picking up transfers. Nelson ( 6-1, 190) won a state
championship with Champagnat in 2013 and has completed
61. 7 percent of his passes for 5,035 yards, 61 TDs and only
7 interceptions in three years as a starting quarterback.
Pearson was the leading receiver at Coral Springs last
season ( 46 catches, 690 yards, 4 TDs) and Thomas
( 5-10, 185) was a budding star at Booker T. Washington.
Defensively, Bush Jr. ( 5-11, 221) and Samuels ( 6-2, 170) are
two of the most sought-after recruits in the state. Gil (6-0,
204) is committed to the University of Miami and Metellus
(6-0, 187) to Georgia Southern. The regular season schedule
includes out of conference games against Douglas, Coconut
Creek, Miami Jackson and St. Thomas Aquinas.
FORT LAUDERDALE FLYING L’S (7A- 14)
2014 RECORD: 4-6
THE COACH: Richard Dunbar
THE PLAYERS: Kevin “K. T.” Thomas (Sr., DB), Jaquwan
Nelson (Sr., DL), Dallas Jeanty (Sr., LB), Bryce Sampson (Sr.,
RB), Junior Demelien (Sr., WR), Alonzo Clark (Soph., QB),
Torri Young (Jr., OL), Darryl Weaver (Jr., LB), Kewann Calloway Jr. (Jr., DB), Duane Smith (Sr., DB), Brandon Jackson
(Sr., DB), Bradley Fleurinord (Sr., WR), Bernard Ross (Sr.,
DL), Mike Hanna (Sr., RB), Nick Bynes (Sr. ,RB), Marquan
Rutherford (Jr., DL), Lucas Moreira (Sr., DL), Tommy German
(Soph., RB), Dominic Caprio (Soph., OL)
THE WORD: After putting an end to a 10-year playoff drought,
the Flying L’s are looking to take the next step and turn the
corner with 18 returning lettermen, including seven starters
on offense and eight on defense. Jeanty ( 6-1, 220) has more
than 20 scholarship offers and boasts a 4.0 GPA and a 29 AC T
score. Nelson ( 6-4, 225) is a University of Miami commitment.
HALLANDALE CHARGERS (5A- 16)
2014 RECORD: 11-1
THE COACH: Dameon Jones
THE PLAYERS: Josh Hammond (Sr., WR), Tyler Huntley (Sr.,
QB), Zack Moss (Sr., RB), Neru N’Shaka (Sr., WR), Jaelyn
Faulk (Sr., DB), Chris Cotto (Sr., WR), Demari Simpkins
(Sr., WR), Kory Johnson (Sr., LB), L. J. Sutherland (Sr., DB),
Romelo Webster (Sr., DB), Andrew Hines (Sr., DB), Deion
Jackson (Sr., DB)
THE WORD: The Chargers bring back nine starters from
a unit that averaged 38. 5 points per game. Huntley ( 6-1,
180), who is committed to FAU, has started for three years
at quarterback, compiling 5,417 yards passing to go with 64
touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He’s got a trio of receivers
with BCS offers to throw to – Hammond ( 6-1, 185), N’Shaka
( 5-11, 180) and Cotto ( 5-11, 185). N’Shaka is committed to
Virginia. Moss, a transfer from Mater Academy, is committed
to the University of Miami along with Jackson, a 6-foot- 1,
170-pound corner who is among a talented group in the
secondary. Only four starters are back overall on defense.
HIGHLANDS CHRISTIAN KNIGHTS (IND.)
2014 RECORD: 2-6
THE COACH: Justin Boone
THE PLAYERS: Kenny Armstrong (Sr., DL/OL), Clayton Baker
(Jr., LB), Josiah Ritzer (Sr., OL/DL), Karl Schuberth (Jr., QB)
THE WORD: Boone, the program’s junior varsity coach,
coached spring practice but is still unsure if he will be the permanent replacement for former coach Nathan Revell. The J.V.
team went 6-0 under Boone last fall. In all, eight starters return
for the Knights, who play in the Florida Independent Football
Conference alongside Palmer Trinity, Canterbury and Hillel.
HOLLYWOOD HILLS SPARTANS (7A- 15)
2014 RECORD: 5-5
THE COACH: Al Lang
THE PLAYERS: Jose Segura (Sr., TE/K), Josh Pena (Sr., LB),
Juan Gomez (Sr., CB), Michael Jentcsh (Sr., OL), Marco Reed
(Sr., C), Garrett Hartwell (Sr., DT), Christopher Hourican
(Sr., LB), Aaron Pierce (Sr., QB), Quincy Bullard (Sr., RB/LB),
Randy Parker (Sr., QB), Mark Cine (Sr., WR), Matthew Scher-rer (Sr., K/P), Bryant Filomeno (Sr., DE), Freddrick Tyler (Sr.,
OT/DE), Tyriq Taylor (Sr., DE), Donavan Henderson Jr. (Sr.,
RB), Nicholas Alequin (Jr., C/LB), Pedro Heleno (Jr., OT),
Anthony Marquest (Jr., DT), Eden Darmon (Jr., CB), Marvin
Estrada-Campbell (Jr., WR/SS), Alexander Shelton (Soph.,
FS/WR), Zeryus Coleman (Soph., WR), Lionel Scriven
(Soph., CB/WR), Davonta Wilson (Soph., WR/CB)
THE WORD: The Spartans lost a 35-33 heartbreaker to
Plantation and just missed the playoffs last season for the
second year in a row. With the Colonels and defending state
champion St. Thomas Aquinas now out of the district, coach
Lang feels like his team should be in the mix for the district
title with Cooper City and Nova. Four starters return on each
side of the ball led by Henderson ( 5-7, 200), who ran for more
than 600 yards last season and should find success running
the football behind an experienced and big offensive line.
Lang’s concerns are youth at receiver and defensive back.
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF BROWARD PUMAS (IND.)
2014 RECORD: N/A
THE COACH: Charles McCrea
THE PLAYERS: Reginald Colson III (Sr., WR/DB), Nicolas
Fennimore (Jr., OL/DL), Makari Tommy (Soph., OL/DL),
Zion Joseph (Jr., LB), Judner Joseph (Sr., OL/DL), Jakari
Anderson (Fr., WR), Seth Blanchette (Jr., WR/DB)
THE WORD: The first-year program is getting on its feet but
it will take on some tough teams, including Delray American
Heritage, Immokalee and Champagnat, in its inaugural season. Colson ( 6-2, 183) played at Hollywood Hills last season.
MCARTHUR MUSTANGS (7A- 15)
2014 RECORD: 0-10
THE COACH: LaRon Culpepper
THE PLAYERS: Dominick Watt (Soph., WR), Steffon Francois
(Sr., WR), Nicholas Simpson (Jr., LB), Hansky Pailant (Soph.,
DL), Tayshon Session (Jr., QB), Tyler Brown (Sr., WR), Jerimiah
Ali (Sr., WR), Cameron Milfort (Sr., RB), Shamar Shaheed (Sr.,
DB), Martinez (Jr., DL), Joven Seraphin (Sr., RB), Brandon
Hobbs (Soph., OL), Deandre Smith (Jr., DB), Abraham Ferguson
(Sr., LB), Jesse Smith (Soph., DB), Tavon Owens (Sr., ATH)
THE WORD: Buster Davis’ one season at the helm
produced the second winless season since 2010 and now
Culpepper, an alumnus, has taken over and revamped the
entire staff. The team will be young, consisting mostly of
sophomores but Culpepper likes the talent at linebacker and
receiver. “We should also have a really good running game,”
Culpepper noted. “Cameron Milfort ( 5-8, 162) will be one of
four backs who see carries.” The Mustangs haven’t made the
playoffs since 2008, but are in a wide-open district with old
rivals Cooper City, Hollywood Hills, Nova and South Broward.
MIRAMAR PATRIOTS (8A- 12)
2014 RECORD: 7-4
THE COACH: Pierre Senatus
THE PLAYERS: Shemar Jean-Charles (Sr., CB), Terrell
Lucas (Sr., DL), Korel Smith (Sr., DB), Obinna Nwanko (Sr.,
OL), Brian Edwards (Jr., DB), Gregori McCrae (Sr., RB),
Deshondre Pitts (Sr., LB), D’Angelo Fulford (Sr., QB), Troy
Fields (Sr., OL), Kyle Anthony (Sr., WR)
THE WORD: Senatus, an assistant at Booker T. Washington for nine years and a four-time state champion, will try to
put the program back on its feet after the Patriots forfeited
their first-round playoff game amid allegations of academic
fraud, impermissible benefits and illegal participation of
ineligible players. Senatus believes he has one of the best
defensive lines and secondaries in the nation. He’s also
pleased with the speed he has at running back. But there’s
no doubt there is very little returning experience or depth
at receiver. Miramar, still, should contend for its ninth
consecutive trip to the playoffs.
MONARCH KNIGHTS (8A- 11)
2014 RECORD: 9-2
THE COACH: Willie Dorado
THE PLAYERS: Isiah McIntyre (Sr., S), Xavious Thomas (Sr.,
RB/DB), Phillip Douglas (Sr., OL), Barrington Robinson (Sr.,
WR), Corey Dunn (Sr., RB/ WR), Karinzo Ward (Jr., QB), Josh
Rito (Jr., WR), Javerick Taylor (Sr., CB), Anthony Stafford (Jr.,
DE/LB), Corrinthian McCray (Jr., LB/S)
THE WORD: The Knights won their first district title in school
history and then lost their coach, Calvin Davis, and all but one
starter to graduation and transfers. Dorado, 57, was hired May
11 after a long coaching search. He comes well experienced
having guided West Boca High from 2005 to 2013, Olympic
Heights from 1997 to 2002 and Nova from 1980 to 1994.
McIntyre, a 6-foot, 180-pound safety, is the one returning
starter. Assistant William Murphy said Monarch traditionally
has a strong junior varsity program and he expects talent to
come in. The Knights should still have an effective passing
game, but Murphy said the running game, offensive line and
defensive line were areas for improvement over the summer.
NORTH BROWARD PREP EAGLES (IND.)
2014 RECORD: 6-4
THE COACH: Rex Nottage
THE PLAYERS: C.J. Riley (Sr., WR), Andres Sierra (Sr., RB),
Dimitri McKenzie (Jr., ATH), Raymond Maldonado (Sr., RB),
Logan Shooster (Soph., DB), Kenny Henningsen (Jr., TE),
Alvin Kim (Sr., DL), Kirby Burns (Soph., LB)
THE WORD: The Eagles ended up fourth in last year’s Gold
Coast Football Conference and bring back 15 lettermen
including four starters on offense and five on defense. Riley
( 6-4, 185) will once again be the primary focus on offense. He
caught 35 passes for 679 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2014
and is considered a three-star recruit, according to Rivals.
com. Sierra ( 6-1, 185) averaged 7. 7 yards a carry last season
in eight games and finished with 482 yards rushing and 5
touchdowns as the second option in the backfield.
NORTHEAST HURRICANES (6A- 15)
2014 RECORD: 1-9
THE COACH: L.D. Anderson
THE PLAYERS: Sandro Joseph (Sr., DB), Vashawn Roland
(Sr., ATH), Webby Saintcy (Sr., DB), Brian Sharp (Sr., WR),
Anthony Foreman (Sr., WR), Jevon Auguste (Sr., QB), Justin
Richardson (Soph., QB), Jemari Ward (Jr., WR), Angel
Rodriguez (Sr., WR), Kevin Kirkland (Jr., LB), Malik Occuir (Jr,
DB), Christopher Williams (Jr., DB), Ronaldo Umana (Sr., OL),
Jorenthail Weston (Jr., DL), Darrius Weston (Sr., LB), Emilio
Aguilar (Sr., OL), Kysean Yorker (Sr., WR), Efember Cruz (Sr.,
K), Cameron Ferguson (Jr., OL)
THE WORD: The Hurricanes have gone 3-17 since
All-American receiver Stacy Coley left the program for the
University of Miami. Anderson, a former youth football
coach, takes over and plans to instill discipline. Joseph
( 6-1, 180) is one of five starters back on defense and had
a school-record 107-yard interception return for a TD last
year. Roland ( 5-7, 160) led the team with 113 tackles in
2014. Coach Anderson said the team will rely heavily on
many young players to step up and fill important roles.
NOVA TITANS (7A- 15)
2014 RECORD: 4-6
THE COACH: Kevin Huntley
THE PLAYERS: Anthony Sims (Sr., RB), Davis Torrin (Sr.,
QB), Andrew Ferguson (Sr., DL), Spencer Weems (Sr., LB),
Juwan Marshall (Jr., DB), Keith Marshall (Jr., ATH)
THE WORD: Huntley was promoted from within to replace
Frank Hepler, who returned to coach in Georgia after just one
year on the job. Twelve lettermen return including four starters
on offense and five on defense. Coach Huntley said he likes
the senior leadership, and with schemes that better fit the
personnel he believes the Titans should be improved this fall.
“We have a number of athletes with college-level talent, but
they need to now perform at that level on field and in unison,”
Huntley said. The Titans haven’t been to the playoffs since
1994. But with Plantation and St. Thomas Aquinas now out of
the district, they may end the playoff drought.
PEMBROKE PINES CHARTER JAGUARS (IND.)
2014 RECORD: 2-8
THE COACH: Steve Bruns
THE PLAYERS: Julian Pierre (Jr., DB), Javon Eaton (Jr.,
RB), Ajai Camacho (Sr., QB), Albert Ramos (Jr., Db0, Jake
Bottom (Sr., OL), Joey Valentine (Sr., RB), Malik Harper (Sr.,
WR), Patrick Eugene (Sr., WR), Mathew Johnson (Sr., ATH),
Connor Wilson (Jr., DB)
THE WORD: The Jaguars dropped out of district play and into
the Gold Coast Conference last year and struggled, picking
up their only wins over Coral Glades and Inlet Grove. Six
lettermen and three starters are back on each side of the ball,
but coach Bruns is optimistic because of the addition of three
players from the school’s regional final basketball team –
Harper ( 6-6, 220), Eugene ( 6-6, 210) and Johnson ( 6-1, 185).
Camacho (6-0, 185) has transferred back to the program and
should benefit from his pair of tall receivers. Ultimately, depth
is Bruns’ biggest concern.
