WEST COAST
THE WORD: In his debut season, coach Jones instilled a toughness in the Raiders that the program had lacked in recent years.
Despite losing a number of skill-position players to graduation,
Riverdale boasts a wealth of talent and depth on both lines,
which will help create opportunities on both sides of the ball. In a
three-team district alongside Lee County power South Fort Myers
and an improving Gulf Coast team, the Raiders will be a tough out
and could earn their first playoff berth since 2010.
RIVERVIEW RAMS (8A- 6)
2014 RECORD: 2-8
THE COACH: Todd Johnson
THE PLAYERS: Dominic Caldwell (Sr., QB), Robert Cusolito
(Soph., OL), Parker De Witt (Jr., OL), A. J. Franco (Jr., LB/FB),
Oshea Grant (Sr., ATH), Aeron Green (Sr., RB/LB), Carlos
Johnson (Sr., WR/FS), Jordan Marankie (Sr., DE), Riley
Matthews (Sr., TE/ WR)
THE WORD: The Rams took a big step back last season
after a playoff appearance in 2013 – their first in five years.
Riverview couldn’t get over the hump in close games, losing
four by a touchdown or less. Caldwell is back for his second
year under center and the Rams will look to Green to lead their
run-heavy attack. The 6-foot- 1, 182-pound Grant is the team’s
biggest playmaker and a threat to score from anywhere on
the field. The offensive line lacks experience but has a young
gem in the 6-foot- 4, 260-pound Cusolito. It may be tough to
foresee Riverview getting back to the playoffs this fall, but
they should prove to be more competitive in district play.
SARASOTA SAILORS (7A- 11)
2014 RECORD: 2-8
THE COACH: Brian Ryals
THE PLAYERS: Briyance Adams (Jr., DE), Josh Booker
(Soph., RB), Jordan Bush (Jr., D T), Dakota Cotner (Sr., WR),
Deron Davis (Jr., LB), Xakari Hawkins (Jr., QB), Gerome Howard
(Jr., DE), Talik Keaton (Soph., WR), Isaiah Priester (Jr., DB)
THE WORD: The Sailors broke in a lot of young talent, especially on the offensive side of the ball, in 2014. However,
last year’s painful transition period should pay dividends
this fall. Hawkins has a big-time weapon in the 6-foot- 1
Keaton, while the 5-foot- 10 Cotner will supply some veteran
savvy. Booker showed flashes as a freshman and will get
the opportunity to be the primary ballcarrier. On defense,
the Sailors have a trio of talented linemen in Adams ( 6-3,
284), Bush ( 5-8, 293) and Howard ( 6-4, 240) and a true
ballhawk in Priester. While Sarasota is at least a season
away from challenging for the top spot in a competitive
district, a .500 record would serve as a solid first step.
SOUTH FORT MYERS WOLFPACK (7A- 12)
2014 RECORD: 10-3
THE COACH: Anthony Dixon (interim)
THE PLAYERS: E’Quan Dorris (Jr., RB), Marlon Gaymon (Jr.,
WR), Dartanian Gotay (Sr., OL), Fe’Najae Gotay (Soph., LB), Willie
Johnson (Sr., WR/S), Nick Matthews (Sr., DL), Dziugas Meilutts
(Sr., DL), Andre Polk (Sr., DB), Howie Wehrenberg (Sr., DL)
THE WORD: The Wolfpack will be playing their first season
without program architect Grant Redhead, who resigned in
May to take the head coaching position at Ohio’s Bryan High
School. In 10 seasons at South Fort Myers, Redhead led the
program to an 82-33 record and seven playoff appearances.
A perennially physical team, the Wolfpack will be formidable
up front in 2015, returning all five starters on its offensive
line and its entire starting front seven on defense. South also
boasts a pair of dynamic playmakers in the 6-foot- 1 Johnson
(882 yards, 10 TDs) and the speedy Dorris (794 yards,
14 TDs). The Wolfpack move up in class into a three-team
district with Riverdale and Gulf Coast and will be favored to
at least match last year’s trip to the regional finals.
SOUTHEAST SEMINOLES (5A- 11)
2014 RECORD: 1-9
THE COACH: John Warren
THE PLAYERS: Landon Arsenault (Sr., WR), Qion Burch
(Jr., ATH), Mike Davis (Sr., OL), Joseph Evans (Sr., LB), Joey
Giardina (Sr., ATH), Darrien Grant (Jr., DL), Blake Greene
(Sr., OL), Ben Hoyle (Sr., TE), Kevin Johnson (Sr., ATH),
Dequan Williams (Jr., ATH)
THE WORD: The Seminoles’ struggles in coach Warren’s
first season weren’t as pervasive as their record may
indicate. Southeast dropped four games by eight or
fewer points because of a maddening inability to prevent
late-game turnovers. The good news is the Seminoles
return 14 starters from last year’s team, including a pair of
top skill-position talents in Arsenault and Johnson. Giardina
will likely get the nod at quarterback and he’ll be protected
by an intimidating offensive line, led by the 6-foot- 4,
310-pound Davis and the 6-foot, 275-pound Greene.
Defensively, Southeast will count on Evans to steady a unit
that allowed 33. 1 points per game a year ago. In a district
with no clear-cut favorite, the Seminoles could easily
bounce back and contend for a playoff berth.
SOUTHWEST FLORIDA CHRISTIAN KINGS (2A- 7)
2014 RECORD: 5-4
THE COACH: Mike Marciano
THE PLAYERS: Conrad Harmon (Sr., OL/DL), Garrett
Pynckel (Sr., FB/LB), Christian Tovar (Sr., RB/LB), Jordan
Weatherbee (Soph., WR/LB), Tristian Upton (Sr., RB/ WR),
Justin Vazquez (Sr., WR)
THE WORD: After two seasons in the independent
Sunshine State Athletic Conference, the Kings enter a very
competitive district. The biggest challenge for Southwest
Florida Christian will be holding its own in the trenches. The
Kings have some playmakers on offense, led by the versatile
6-foot- 1, 185-pound Upton, who rushed for 1,033 yards and
16 touchdowns and had a team-high 382 receiving yards
and 6 touchdown catches a year ago. Defensively, Southwest
Florida Christian may struggle against some athletic
offenses, but Pynckel and Tovar are solid in the middle.
ST. JOHN NEUMANN CELTICS (2A- 7)
2014 RECORD: 4-5
THE COACH: Simon Codrington III
THE PLAYERS: Paul Costain (Sr., TE), Anthony DeBella (Sr.,
OL/DL), Zach Maas (Sr., WR/DB), Greg Mathieu (Sr., DB/
WR), Andrew Pejor (Jr., LB), Nick Prisco (Sr., QB/DB), Stanley
Thompson (Soph., DB/RB), Julien Tirado (Jr., QB/ WR), Niko
Zea (Sr., DE/LB)
THE WORD: Codrington, an offensive lineman on the
2006 University of Florida national championship team
and the former offensive coordinator at Liberty High in
Kissimmee, hopes to bring some stability to a Celtics
program that has had three different coaches the past
three seasons. Neumann plans to play a physical style of
football and has some beef up front, led by the 6-foot- 5,
265-pound DeBella. Tirado will lead a run-heavy attack,
with Thompson being the best bet to be the primary ballcarrier. Defensively, the Celtics have a solid back seven with
Mathieu and Zea highlighting the talented group. Neumann
will have to avoid falling behind because of a lack of proven
offensive firepower.
ST. STEPHEN’S FALCONS (IND.)
2014 RECORD: 7-3
THE COACH: Tod Creneti
THE PLAYERS: Fred Billy (Soph., QB), Jett Gillum (Soph.,
LB/RB), Bobby Harrison (Sr., DB/ WR), Jordan Murrell (Jr.,
WR/DB), Peyton Vining (Jr., LB/WR), Alex Virgilio (Jr., FB/LB),
Jake Westberry (Sr., OL/DL)
THE WORD: Fresh off the best finish since resurrecting
its football program in 2006, St. Stephen’s should again
be considered one of the top teams in the Sunshine State
Athletic Conference as 16 starters return. Offensively, the
Falcons boast a dynamic athlete in Billy, a dual threat who
averaged more than 7 yards per carry last season. Murrell
and Harrison return as the team’s top receiving targets and
are also defensive standouts. The 6-foot- 3, 240-pound
Westberry, a two-way anchor, lends stability to a pair of
lines that saw some standouts graduate.
VENICE INDIANS (7A- 11)
2014 RECORD: 9-2
THE COACH: John Peacock
THE PLAYERS: Malik Bryant (Sr., RB/WR), Bryce Carpenter
(Soph., QB), Joe Chesmond (Sr., OL/DL), Jarrod Hewitt (Sr.,
DL), Kyle Johnson (Jr., OL), Sage Lee (Sr., DB), David Reister
(Sr., OL), Kade Sleight (Sr., DE)
THE WORD: The Indians jump up a classification but
will be co-favorites along with Palmetto to advance to
the postseason. Last season, Venice’s run ended in the
regional semifinals to eventual 6A runner-up Armwood. The
Indians lost a whopping 28 seniors to graduation but bring
back a dynamic, dual-threat quarterback in Carpenter;
an imposing offensive line, led by returning starters
Chesmond, Johnson and Reister; and a defensive terror in
Hewitt. The 6-2, 290-pound defensive tackle led Venice in
sacks ( 13) and added 105 tackles ( 70 solo). The Indians
lack the depth they enjoyed the past couple of seasons,
returning just two starters on the defensive side of the
ball. However, by the end of the season, Venice should be a
formidable foe.
