WORK HARD. THE MANTRA IS preached by parents, teachers and coaches daily. It’s what every player at every level must
exhibit to be successful in the game of football.
There are no days off. Every day presents an
opportunity to get better, both on and off the
gridiron. This year is no different. From the
coaches and players featured in this magazine
to the state’s top seniors to the underclassmen
to watch, every single one has put the work in to
be successful, and realizes, at the same time,
the work has just begun.
While it’s a different kind of work, with much
less lifting and running involved, that same
effort was put into the 2013 edition of Friday
Night Football Florida. It started more than
a year ago and culminates with the 96-page
magazine you hold in your hands today.
Because high school athletes are teenagers, still developing size, speed, strength and
football IQ, it’s impossible to correctly rank the
state’s top 100 seniors, or pin down the top 50
juniors and tab the most explosive sophomores
in the state. With that in mind, we focus our
attention on highlighting and showcasing those
players who have begun rising to the top, knowing full well that the process is not complete.
For some, the process has only begun. While
magazine-cover boys Sony Michel (Georgia)
and Kain Daub (Florida State) have already
made their respective college selections, there
are other players who, as you read this, are
still under the radar, itching with anticipation
to showcase their skills in hopes of earning a
That is the reason we set out to include as
many players’ names as possible. It is through
the dedicated efforts of the FNF Florida staff,
writers and photographers, and coaches from
across the state that we made that happen for
the fifth consecutive year.
STORIES OF INSPIRATION
Passion is displayed when one works hard.
Football is not for the weak. It’s not for those
just looking for an after-school activity. It takes
dedication and a desire to put everything you
have into being the best you can be.
This year’s magazine provides you with a tremendous opportunity to learn from those with
inspirational stories to share.
Starting on page 30, you’ll read about a
player in Miami who loves the game so much
that he continues playing even while faced with
a degenerative eye disease that is taking his
vision. You’ll read about a player in Jacksonville
who suffered a concussion during practice –
and how that very concussion may have saved
his life – and how a team in Weeki Wachee
came together to support a 13-year-old cancer
patient they had never met.
