Kelston Boss (Sr., LB/TE), New’K Tillman (Jr., ATH), Daniel
Greenhouse (Sr., C), D’Amonte Knight (Sr., WR/DB), Gage
Krull (Jr., TE), Ron Alston (Sr., WR), Nigel Martinez (Sr., LB),
Steven Ruiz (Sr., LB/FB), Jalen Slayback (Jr., OT), Jerode
Jackson (Sr., DB)
THE WORD: The Seminoles have made the playoffs four of
the past five seasons but this will be a very young team,
potentially starting only eight seniors. But coach Vite really
likes the look of his junior class. Williams has multiple scholarship offers and will be key. Tillman played nine games at
QB last season and Artis (6-0, 205) is a powerhouse with
a 380-pound bench press coming out of winter workouts.
Krull has good hands and his best work may be as a blocker.
Slayback has already played 15 varsity games. The offensive and defensive lines will dictate how far Seminole will go.
SOUTH LAKE EAGLES (6A- 10)
2012 RECORD: 4-6
THE COACH: Mark Woolum
THE PLAYERS: Davonte Solomon (Sr., QB/DB), T.J. McCoy
(Jr., OL/DL), Kevin Evans (Jr., RB), Donovan Welch (Jr., OL),
Esteban Valerio (Sr., DT), Taylor Dixon (Sr., DB), Davonta Williamson (Sr., DE), Keith Evans (Sr., LB), Derrius Brown (Sr.,
WR/DB)
THE WORD: The Eagles have only six seniors in Woolum’s second season as head coach, but the junior class is blessed
with size and speed. That showed in a 35-14 spring win
over St. Cloud with a flurry of big plays. A revamped staff
includes veteran head coach Bud O’Hara, formerly of East
Ridge. South Lake has improved depth and should be able
to count on good defensive line play. Keith Evans is a welcomed newcomer to a squad that includes his twin brother.
McCoy ( 6-2, 285) commands attention from both recruiters
and opponents. South Lake’s junior varsity team went 7-1 in
2012 and sent some promising sophomores up.
TAVARES BULLDOGS (5A- 11)
2012 RECORD: 2-8
THE COACH: Chris Gauntlett
THE PLAYERS: Garrett Payne (Sr., MLB), Christian Sears (Sr.,
QB), Osirus Munn (Sr., DB/WR), Demetrius Rameriez (Sr.,
DB/RB), John Perdue (Sr., RB), Ezekiel Thomas (Jr., RB), Joey
Cavallaro (Sr., DB/ WR), Esteven Barajas (Jr., OLB), Thaddeus
Sharp (Jr., NT), Perry “P.J.” Hambrick (Jr., OT)
THE WORD: Tavares has more speed and leadership on defense and better experience on both sides of the ball. Payne
had 38 tackles, 8 for a loss, along with 4 fumble recoveries
and 2 forced fumbles as a junior defensive end. He will stand
up this season and be counted on to drive the defense with
his aggressive brand of leadership. Barajas had 30 tackles
and Cavallaro 28. Sears was 47-of-128 for 479 yards passing. Rameriez and Munn are transfers who add athleticism.
Perdue and Thomas are bruisers at running back.
TIMBER CREEK WOLVES (8A- 3)
2012 RECORD: 10-2
THE COACH: Jim Buckridge
THE PLAYERS: Jacques Patrick (Jr., RB), Stuckey Mosley (Sr.,
QB), Javonte Seabury (Sr., WR), Christian Pereira (Sr., PK),
Ryan Urquhart (Jr., OL), Omari Workman (Sr., DT), Tyler Cameron (Sr., DE), Ryan Hutchinson (Jr., LB), Mitchell Estrada
(Sr., LB), Xavier Stephenson (Sr., LB/DL), Jake Smiley (Sr.,
LB), Alex Vartterott (Sr., TE)
THE WORD: Creek’s ground-and-pound offense has its
pulverizer in Patrick, a 6-foot- 2, 215-pounder who entered
spring drills with a scholarship offer from every school in the
SEC and a lot more. He carried 231 times for 2,032 yards
and 29 TDs as a sophomore. His “big” brother, Seabury, is
a speedster in space and Mosley might be the best passer
the Wolves have had. Those ingredients will keep defenses
honest. Pereira was the All-District kicker. Urquhart ( 6-5,
265) and Matt Steinbach ( 6-3, 270) are juniors on a big but
inexperienced offensive line. Workman is the only returning
defensive starter as the Wolves look to extend a streak of
eight consecutive playoff appearances.
TRINITY PREP SAINTS (3A- 3)
2012 RECORD: 2-8
THE COACH: Mike Kruczek
THE PLAYERS: Jarred Herron (So., QB), Tyler Nemec (Sr.,
WR/S), Taylor Schaeffer (Sr., RB/LB), Johnny Evans (Jr., TE),
Ryan Schaeffer (So., MLB), Kyle Altomare (Jr., S/WR), Jake
Bentley (Jr., ILB/OL), Chris Schuttler (So., WR/CB), Paxton
Fleming (Jr., NT), Robert Simms (Sr., WR/CB)
THE WORD: Kruczek, a former NFL quarterback who coached
at nearby UCF for 19 seasons – six as the head coach –
takes over at a school just down the road from his home.
He was offensive coordinator for the Saints in 2007 before
returning to pro and college jobs. This is a very young team
but one the coach feels can make things happen in the no-huddle, spread offense he has installed. “The kids picked it
up well through the spring,” he said. “They’re a smart bunch
and they work hard.”
UMATILLA BULLDOGS (4A- 4)
2012 RECORD: 6-4
THE COACH: Rodney Torrance
THE PLAYERS: Austin Clayton (Sr., DE/OT), Kaleb Robinson
(So., ATH), Preston Leonard (Sr., TE/LB), Justin Lewis (Jr.,
QB/DB), Cane Minor (Jr., WB/DB), Brett Bush (Sr., FB), Michael Dick (Sr., RB/DB), Ethan Madden (Jr., WR/DB), Josh
Enfinger (So., QB)
THE WORD: The Bulldogs have gone 6-4 in consecutive seasons and this is a quicker team, though not as deep with only
five starters back. “We had a lot more bodies we could throw
at you last year,” coach Torrance said. “We probably only
have about 16 kids with any varsity experience. But we’re
more talented athletically. We feel like we’ll be competitive
in our district.”
UNIVERSITY COUGARS (8A- 3)
2012 RECORD: 7-4
THE COACH: Don Stark
THE PLAYERS: Brandon Pylar (Sr., TE/FB), Jan Jose (Sr., TE),
King Belin (Sr., OL), Stephen Ulmer (Sr., QB), Christian Bar-boza (Sr., LB), R.J. Perry (Sr., DL), Eric Welch (Sr., DB), Aaron
Gipson (Jr., RB), Andy Concannon (So., LB), Jon Santiago (Jr.,
DL), Nick Lebanno (Jr., CB), Isaiah French (Sr., DB)
THE WORD: The Cougars captured the first district title in
school history, then played eventual state champion Apopka
tough in a 45-35 first-round playoff loss. Belin ( 6-3, 270)
was an All-Central Florida blocker and Pylar ( 6-3, 230) was
the All-Metro Conference tight end, but the offensive line
needs some work in order to be as punishing as it was a
year ago. The skill spots are solid and coach Stark said this
offense has a chance to be improved. He said preventing the
big play will be key to having the defense needed to repeat
as the district champion.
WEKIVA MUSTANGS (7A- 4)
2012 RECORD: 1-9
THE COACH: Kenard Lang
THE PLAYERS: Darrion Williams (Jr., ATH), Deandre Danger-field (Sr., OLB), Baccari Austell (So., CB), Deondre Fair (Sr.,
RB), Jarvis Scott (Jr., RB), Jonathan (Jones (So., OLB), Bart
Bell (Jr., QB), Teddy Adkins (Jr., OLB), Devon Cooper (Sr., C),
Max Lopez (Jr., OG), Jay Francois (Jr., OT), Jermaine Grace Jr.
(Sr., CB), Jarod Bargaineer (Sr., WR)
THE WORD: Coach Lang came to Wekiva after leading Jones
to the playoffs four times in the past five seasons. Can he
turn that trick at a school that has never gotten out of its
district? Fair, a move-in who excelled as a junior running
back for Lake Brantley, certainly enhances the chances. He
joins a talented backfield that leads a young team. Scott had
a 91-yard TD run in the spring game. Lang said the outside
linebackers will lead the defense. Both the offense and
defense have new schemes. “It’s a big learning curve for the
guys,” Lang said. “We can be pretty good if we take care of
the little things.”
WEST ORANGE WARRIORS (8A- 4)
2012 RECORD: 5-5
THE COACH: Bob Head
THE PLAYERS: Garrett Johnson (Sr., WR), Jamarcus Federick
(Sr., RB), Kyle Griffits (Sr., TE), Hayden Griffits (Sr., QB), Kobie
Grace (Sr., SS), Korion Brady (Sr., WR/DB), Alban Harp (Sr.,
OG), Ishmael Hollis (Jr., OL/DL), Luke Hancock (Sr., OL), Eddie McDoom (So., WR), C.J. Williams, Sr., CB)
THE WORD: Head, who went 50-37 at neighboring Olympia,
takes over a program that was highly competitive but
fell short of the playoffs in the past two seasons. He has
constructed a new staff and installed new offensive and
defensive schemes. Toughness in the trenches is a question
mark, but the Warriors have guys who can find the end zone.
Johnson racked up 104 catches for 1,699 yards and 17 TDs
over the past two seasons, and Federick rushed for 1,100-
plus last season. The Griffits twins are heady honor roll
students who know the game. “Our offense is dynamite with
a lot of weapons,” coach Head said. The Titans must replace
nine defensive starters and replenish special teams.
WINDERMERE PREP LAKERS
(IND.)
2012 RECORD: 4-5
THE COACH: Jacob Doss
THE PLAYERS: Parker Davis (So., QB), Chris Granjean (Jr., RB),
Kevin Babich (Jr., TE), Omar Khamis (Sr., C), Andrew Kane
(Jr., WR), Ryan Grosso (So., LB), Daniel O’Brien (Sr., K/P),
Blaze Alldredge (Fr., WR), Macauley Ford (Sr., WR), William
Wu (Jr., DL)
THE WORD: The Lakers lost 13 seniors and are looking for a
number of young players to step into starting roles. The offensive line in particular has some holes to fill. The receiving
corps is talented, so expect Windermere Prep to continue
to air it out. Davis had a strong freshman season and has
gotten bigger, stronger and more confident.
WINTER PARK WILDCATS (8A- 3)
2012 RECORD: 4-6
THE COACH: Tim Shifflet
THE PLAYERS: Trent Harris (Sr., DE/TE), Rafael Lopes (Sr.,
ATH), Gabe McClary (Sr., WR/DB), Angelo Owens (Sr., OL),
Justice Powell (Sr., OL), Jacob Gregory (Sr., LB), Cameron
Gergley (Sr., DB), Chase Stutts (Sr., TE/DE), Carl Pfiefer (Sr.,
DL), Elliott Hammond (Jr., RB/DB), J.P. Colton (Jr., QB), Malik
Foy (So., RB)
THE WORD: The Wildcats are coming off their first sub-.500
season in five years but are optimistic with talented junior
Colton surrounded by seniors that have a lot of varsity experienced. It also helps Colton that his offensive line has
a lot of reps. That said, the Wildcats are also counting on a
number of sophomores – particularly in skill positions – and
there is a shortage of depth. Harris ( 6-3, 231) is a big-time
prospect. He was in on 68 tackles and had nine sacks and 4
forced fumbles in 2012.
WINTER SPRINGS BEARS (7A- 4)
2012 RECORD: 1-9
THE COACH: Rodney Brewington
THE PLAYERS: Anthony Siciliano (Sr., QB), Bo Alexander (Jr.,
OT), Ryan Walsh (Sr., OG), Devonte Mitchell (Jr., DB/WR),
R.J. Bradley (Jr., RB/DB), Brandon Rod (Sr., LB-FB), Mason
Johnston (Sr., LB/FB), Brenton Nelson (So., RB/DB), Jordan
Bowersox (Jr., WR/DB), Aaron Penn (Sr., TE), Anthony Martin
(Jr., DT), Marquise Johnson (Jr., DT), Bruce Holliman (Sr., DT),
Jordan LeSage (Sr., TE)
THE WORD: Brewington came down from North Carolina
to take over a program that went 1-9 the past two years.
The Bears played perennial Seminole County power Lake
Brantley tough in a 14-7 spring game loss, which likely was
a confidence booster. Siciliano, who became the starting
QB in Week 3, will direct a more wide-open spread offense.
There is some size up front with Alexander at 6-4, 290
and Walsh at 6-2, 270. Bowersox is a do-it-all guy who had
tackles, interceptions, fumble recoveries, punt returns and
a 95-yard kickoff return TD last season.
