SHACKELFORD LOVES
that Sermon has increased
his playing weight to 218
pounds – up from 205 during
his sophomore season. Still,
he plans to exercise caution
with his “bell cow” less than
a year after the Oklahoma
University commit suffered a
fractured bone in his back.
“We’re going to pick and
choose our battles,” Shackelford said. “We want to get
him through the season, but
he’s our guy. We’re going to
get him touches and put him
in a position to help us win a
lot of games. We’ll try to be
smart and protect him, but
all great running backs want
the ball.”
THE STATE’S TOP RUNNING BACK PROSPECT, Trey Sermon, played two games last season with a fractured bone in his back. It’s safe to say no one will question Sermon’s toughness moving forward.
Sermon, a 6-foot- 1, 218-pound tailback, took a hit to the
back during Sprayberry’s second game last season. The team
trainers told Sprayberry coach Billy Shackelford the injury was
merely a bruise, so the coach eased up on Sermon’s practice
workload but continued to play him in games.
The junior tailback rushed for 200 yards and three
touchdowns during the first week after the injury, but could
barely withstand the pain in the second week.
X-rays then revealed the fracture in his back, and
Sermon was ruled out for the remainder of the season.
“He was our bell cow,” Shackelford said. “He went from
having what would have been a phenomenal season to not
great – for his standards. Any season that ends with an
injury is disappointing.”
Sermon was initially discouraged by the setback, but re-
turned to competitive sports this spring – both as a track
and field and spring football participant. After wearing a
back brace all winter, he added some body art – tattoos
that read, “Trust God,” and “Have Faith.”
“With the path I’m on, it is easy to get distracted,”
Sermon said. “But just by looking at these things every
day, it will always help me stay focused and grounded.”
Sermon will look to bring that focus and humility to the
football field this fall, when he will be the focus of the
Sprayberry offense. As a sophomore, Sermon rushed for
over 500 yards and 11 touchdowns.
“When you watch him run, it’s unique,” Shackelford said.
“He’s very fast in the open field. He has great acceleration and
lateral speed. He has a great ability to make people miss.”
