EVERY SPRING, A FEW GOOD BUDDIES IN THE BUSINESS JOIN ME FOR A sweeping, weeklong trip through the state of Georgia to amass the content for FNF Georgia. Up, down and side-to-side — we go where the talent is.
And this spring, we logged about as many miles as possible. The talent in Georgia is
already hyped to the max, but it can’t be overstated. And it’s in every pocket and corner
of the state.
A record 20 Georgia natives were selected in April’s NFL Draft, three of which were first
That’s a mark that most likely won’t be the standard for long.
I say that because of the answer to this question: What state produced the most signees
to SEC schools from 2009 to 2013?
It’s not Florida; the former standard for top talent in bunches. It’s not even close. Georgia sent 309 players to the greatest college football conference, while the Sunshine State
finished second with 253.
In total, over 185 players from the Peach State signed to play football at the FBS level
in 2013. All the numbers speak to this truth — Georgia is solidly on the Mount Rushmore
of states with high school talent, as likely to produce a harvest as rich as California, Texas
Perhaps my favorite aspect about all this talent is that there is no such thing as a “
Georgia guy,” no set script or similar traits to loosely group all the players that move on the
Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi, and it’s probably the most diverse,
too. Mountains to the north, metro in the middle, coast on the east and flat farmlands
merging south to Florida and Alabama — a drive in any direction quickly changes the circumstances and situations.
The type of players found throughout the state is equally a mixed bag.
Detailing the contrasting types of teams, players and programs is the main focus of
this year’s FNF Georgia. Our vision was to take readers to tradition-heavy South Georgia,
into the hallways of Valdosta High, where trophy cases are stocked with proof of past
In turn, we also showcase the rise of Gwinnett County, where schools like Peachtree
Ridge and Grayson were able to build powerhouse programs and win state titles less than
a decade into existence.
While we honed in on the South Georgia and North Metro areas, the talent isn’t exclusive to those spots (yeah, duh!). We’ve also highlighted players like Nick Chubb, a running
back from the small, close-knit community of Cedartown, Norcross star defender Lorenzo
Carter, Gainesville quarterback Deshaun Watson and many more.
We wanted to give as much prospective as possible because defining a top high school
player simply as a “Georgia kid,” isn’t nearly enough. It doesn’t do the kids, or the state for
that matter, justice.
This upcoming season, like all years, is sure to produce memorable highlights during
great games featuring great players. Sure, there’s the usual list of teams that will challenge
for state titles and already over a hundred players preparing to play in college.
But you never know what team might surprise a well-known commodity; you never know
if a lesser-known teammate to one of those five-star prospects is on the verge of making
the next crucial tackle or touchdown.
Of course, in my opinion, that’s the best part. That’s why we make the spring trips and
why you head out every Friday night.
That’s Georgia football, thank goodness.
