IT’S EASY TO BE ENVIOUS OF NICK RUF- fin. The do-it-all senior for St. Pius is one of the most highly-touted players in the state. As such, he has offers from nearly every
major Division I program in college football. And
he plays on a St. Pius team that is one of the
best in Georgia every season, and looks primed
for another run to the Class AAA state title
game after taking runner-up honors in 2012.
But his career nearly came to a premature
end prior to his sophomore season.
He was coughing up blood for no apparent
reason and had difficulty breathing. Doctors
couldn’t diagnose it, either. Early on, they
speculated he had sarcoidosis, a disease which
involves inflammation of the body’s organs. It’s
a condition Ruffin said would have prevented
him from continuing to play organized football.
