IT ALWAYS SEEMS THE NEWTON EA- gles are factored into state title talk this time of year. Newton last held .the state crown in 2005 and is expected to
challenge for top honors in 2013. The Eagles
build a solid run game around seniors Kevin
Shorter and Anthony Hadnot. This is W.T.
Johnson’s third full season in charge at Newton (He took over in mid-season of 2010 after
the unexpected death of Curtis Barbay) and
he hopes it proves to be a charm. The Eagles
are FNF’s projected number one team in
Class 2A, Division I heading into the season.
Newton also has talented defensive back
Troy Pegues and wide out Keyaun Seastrunk.
The Eagles went 13-1 last fall and will be
challenged by defending kingpin Cameron
Yoe, which rolled to a perfect 15-0 record and
The Yoeman lost of good number of seniors
in 2012 and look to reload rather than rebuild.

reason to believe a repeat is a real possibility.
Making it out of District 13-2A will be a tall order for the Yoeman as the McGregor Bulldogs
improved from 5-5 in 2011 to 9-2 last season
The sixth ranked Bulldogs are paced by senior
signal-caller Troy Allison. The tradition-rich
Daingerfield Tigers are expected to carry 10-
2A and check in at number three.
Another district to keep an eye on in 2A, DI
will be 9-2A, where Andy Evans’ Tatum Eagles
look to improve on a 9-3 finish in 2012. The
Eagles are ranked fifth in the preseason ratings behind Newton, Yoe, Daingerfield and
the Wall Hawks.
THE CANADIAN WILDCATS HAvE BE- come a juggernaut of late. In the last six years alone, Canadian has won a pair of state titles and played for another. The Wildcats won in 2A in 2007 and did
same in 2008 in Class A. They were runner-ups to the throne in 2009 in Class A and are
projected by The Old Coach FNF Texas to win
in Class 2A, DII this year.
The Ben Arbuckle-to-Boston Hudson pass-catch combo will be tough to defend in 2013.
Canadian went three rounds deep last year
and finished 10-3. It was the East Bernard
Brahmas, The Old Coach FNF Texas’ No. 2
squad, which ran the table in 2012.
Look for a clash between the third-ranked
Sonora Broncos and the 10th-rated Post Antelopes to see who emerges from Region 1. The
2011 champion Refugio Bobcats are primed
for another title push after going 12-1 in 2012.
The most competitive region appears to
be East Texas’ Region 3, which houses three
teams in the top 10.
