8WHY IS NORTH CAROLINA LOSING MANY OF ITS TOP COACHES?
Whether it’s rising stars like former
South Columbus head coach Jake Fonvielle,
Hough’s Bobby Collins or Cleveland’s marc
morris, North Carolina head football coaches
are moving across the border to South Carolina or leaving the profession all together at
an alarming rate.
is it the constant battle over teacher pay in
North Carolina or is there another reason our
top coaches continue to leave?
9WILL CLINTON HEAD COACH BOB LEWIS REACH THE 300-WIN MARK?
Lewis is certainly a legend in North Carolina.
Since graduating from Campbell in 1966, he’s
won 292 games and five state championships.
His Darkhorses went 7-4 in 2013, so is this the
year he reaches that magical plateau?
10WILL SOCIAL MEDIA CONTINUE TO CHANGE THE GAME?
Whether it’s the quick reporting of scores,
instant access to coaches or following re-
cruiting news, Twitter and other social media
platforms have changed the sports landscape.
How will this technology change the game
moving forward, and how will other technologies revolutionize the sport in terms of watching or listening to games online and assisting
coaches in game preparation?
1IS MALLARD CREEK THE NEXT DYNASTY IN 4AA?
By CHriS HuGHES
in the four years prior to 2013, mike Palmieri’s mallard Creek mavericks were used to
being the bridesmaid. They went 48-6 over
that span and twice lost to the eventual state
champion in the regional finals.
Fast forward to this season and the mavs
are the reigning 4aa champions, and they appear poised to add to their 16-game winning
streak and repeat their title. However, with
the loss of a tremendous senior class, will
the mavericks reload and become the next
dynasty in the 4aa class, or will they be one
2CAN ANYONE STOP HAVELOCK? Since becoming the head coach at
Havelock in 2008, Jim Bob Bryant has had six
winning seasons, compiled a 79-11 record and
is looking for his fourth straight 3a championship. along with churning out titles, Havelock
has also dominated the recruiting front with
several players signing with BCS programs.
is it safe to go ahead and engrave Have-
lock’s name on the state title trophy or can
someone put an end to their dominance?
3CAN THE RALEIGH AREA 4AA TEAMS CATCH UP WITH CHAR-
LOTTE AND WIN THEIR FIRST STATE
CHAMPIONSHIP IN OVER A QUARTER
Football in Wake County is the best it’s
been in a long time, but there is still some-
thing missing – a state championship trophy.
in the 27 years since Garner defeated Harding for the 1987 championship, Charlotte
teams have accounted for 12 titles and the
last few head-to-head matchups have been
ugly. raleigh programs are on the rise but
can they close the gap on the Queen City?
4WITH NEARLY 70 COACHING CHANGES, WILL A NEW COACH
TAKE THE REINS OF A STRUGGLING
PROGRAM AND TURN IT AROUND?
When Donnie Kiefer left Tuscola for Central Cabarrus in 2012, many questioned why
an established coach would go to such a
struggling program. Two years later, Central
Cabarrus is a premier 3a program.
Looking at this year’s coaching changes,
who is poised to do the same? The best bet is
to look no further than Thomasville where Wes
mattera has replaced legendary coach allen
Brown. The Bulldogs have the tradition and
talent to once again reach the mountain top.
5NORTH CAROLINA HAS GAINED A REPUTATION IN RECENT YEARS AS
A HOT BED FOR RUNNING BACKS. CAN
THIS YEAR’S CLASS OF BACKS ADD TO
AN ALREADY STERLING RECORD?
running backs like Todd Gurley, Keith
marshall and T.J. Logan are dazzling fans
and creating major headaches for opposing
coaches. Princeton running back Johnny
Frasier and Concord’s rocky reid are among
the top recruits in the nation and should only
add to the state’s legacy. and there could be
a few more diamonds in the rough waiting to
be discovered this season.
6IS THIS THE YEAR SCOTLAND HEAD COACH RICHARD BAILEY
WINS HIS FIRST STATE TITLE?
There is no question that Scotland head
football coach richard Bailey is among the
best coaches in the Tar Heel State. He’s compiled a 147-46 record, had seven-straight
10-win seasons, served as a Shrine Bowl assistant coach and has a reputation for excellence both on and off the field.
However, he’s been unable to break through
in state championship games. He’s come up
short in each of his four appearances, including a 24-7 defeat to Greensboro Dudley in
last year’s 4a title game.
The Fighting Scots are loaded again this
season, so is this finally the year Bailey earns
his first championship ring?
7WILL THE SMOKY MOUNTAIN CONFERENCE CONTINUE TO
DOMINATE IN 1A?
One can’t discuss 1a football without mentioning the dominance of murphy and Swain
County. Over the past three seasons, those
two teams have combined for an 80-15 record, claimed three state titles and had two
runner-up finishes. is there any other conference that can come close to that?
