NO PROBLEMS SEEING OVER THE LINE
Union Grove is home of not only one of the best quarterbacks in
the state — Jonathan Slade is also one of the biggest.
The rising senior stands 6-foot- 8 and 235 pounds, a real sight to
see lining up under center.
Slade has a 16-6 record in two seasons as a starter with 22 career touchdowns. He’ll look to improve his completion percentage
and lower his interceptions in 2014.
If both those things happen, watch for the Wolverines to make a
run in late November.
BUCKET LIST ITEM: DEKALB COUNTY’S
Get this — on October 10, DeKalb’s famed Hallford Stadium hosts
not one, but two homecoming games.
Homecoming means a great deal to communities and programs,
with alums returning to relive old times and new memories made
by current students. So imagine all that multiplied by two.
Arabia Mountain versus Redan and Southwest DeKalb versus
Miller Grove should provide plenty of good football action, with the
regular homecoming festivities ongoing for all four teams.
Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?
REVERED RIVALRY: WARNER
This game speaks for itself. It has everything — two successful
programs rich in tradition in close proximity with playoff implications on the line.
The Demons beat the Eagles 28-18 in 2013 — it was Northside’s
only regular season loss of the season. That’s how good both these
Northside made it to the second round of the playoffs, while Warner Robins was bounced in the quarterfinals. Without a state title,
only one team — the Demons — took bragging rights away from last
season. That’s how much this game means.
CAN’T MISS OUT-OF-CONFERENCE CONTEST:
GAINESVILLE AT GRAYSON
Former 6A champs Grayson had a losing season in 2013… And
after a successful multi-year run, Gainesville may fall back to
the pack a bit in 2014. But there’s plenty of reason to watch this
season-opening match-up on Aug. 29.
Grayson boasts plenty of talent, including Georgia-bound senior
defensive lineman Justin Young. Meanwhile, the Red Elephants
are transitioning from the Deshaun Watson Era. The now-Clemson
quarterback led Gainesville to the state title in 2012.
Both these teams have tradition. And both these teams want to
get back to the Dome. It starts in late August.
